Privacy Policy

NameChai.com has no user accounts, no login, and no database of its own. You can use everything on this site without creating an account or handing over an email address. This page describes the little that is collected, and where it goes.

What information we collect

The project description you type. Your search text is processed to generate name candidates and is not stored by NameChai. It is sent to our AI provider (see third-party services below) to produce suggestions.

Usage analytics — only with your consent. If you allow it in the consent banner, we use PostHog to understand how the product is used: page views, interactions with the page, and product events such as the search text submitted and which domains you shortlist, along with standard device and browser metadata. If you decline (or make no choice), no analytics run at all.

Server logs and rate limiting. Like nearly every website, our servers see your IP address. The public MCP endpoint additionally keeps short-lived, in-memory per-IP request counters to prevent abuse; these are not written to a database.

How we use it

To run the service (generate names, check availability), to understand aggregate usage so we can improve the product, and to protect the service from abuse. We do not sell data and we show no ads.

Affiliate Links & Tracking

When you click an affiliate link on this site, Namecheap (via its affiliate platform) may place a tracking cookie on your device for up to 30 days to attribute any resulting purchase to NameChai. This cookie is set by Namecheap or its affiliate platform, not by NameChai directly. We do not control or have access to this tracking data beyond aggregate commission reporting.

Third-party services

NameChai is built on a handful of services. What each one receives:

• PostHog (US-hosted) — the analytics events described above, processed on PostHog’s infrastructure.
• OpenRouter — receives your project description in order to generate name candidates.
• Namecheap, Inc. — receives candidate domain names (not your search text) to check availability. Its affiliate platform separately handles outbound affiliate links, described above.
• Domain registries and Cloudflare DNS — receive candidate domain names during availability checks, from our servers.
• GitHub, YouTube, and X — our servers fetch public profile pages for candidate names to check handle availability. Nothing about you is included in those requests.
• Hetzner (Germany) — hosts the servers this site runs on.

Fonts are bundled with the site itself — no requests go to Google Fonts or any font CDN when you load a page.

Cookies

NameChai sets no cookies of its own; it stores only your analytics consent choice in your browser’s local storage. PostHog sets an analytics cookie (and browser storage) to distinguish visits only after you allow analytics. If you click an affiliate link, Namecheap or its affiliate platform may set the tracking cookie described above on their domains.

Legal bases & international transfers

Where EU/UK data-protection law applies: analytics run on the basis of your consent; operating the service, keeping server logs, and preventing abuse rely on our legitimate interest in providing and protecting a working product. PostHog and OpenRouter process data in the United States, so using NameChai involves transfers outside the EU/EEA; both providers publish their own GDPR safeguards for those transfers.

Your rights & choices

You can withdraw analytics consent at any time — as easily as it was given: reset your analytics choice (the banner will ask again, and nothing runs until you answer).

If you are in the EU/EEA or UK, you also have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data concerning you, to object to or restrict processing, to data portability, and to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. Since NameChai keeps no user database, most requests will concern analytics data held in PostHog — contact us and we will handle it.

Data retention & contact

NameChai keeps no store of personal data: searches are processed transiently and server-side rate-limit counters expire within minutes. Analytics events are retained in PostHog according to its data-retention settings. For privacy questions, contact privacy@namechai.com.
